CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 37: Legislation for Agricultural Climate Change Adaptation Tools Advances in the Assembly

California State Assembly District 37 recently issued the following announcement.

The Assembly Natural Resources Committee approved Assembly Bill 1071 by Assemblymember Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara), which seeks to make climate adaptation tools more readily available to farmers and agricultural businesses.

“The climate crisis has taken on a toll on farmers throughout the state and in my district,” said Assemblymember Monique Limón. “To protect our agricultural businesses, the livelihoods of hardworking Californians and address a changing climate, we need to invest in our farmers and support their effort to face these growing challenges. I’m proud to author this bill.”

AB 1071 would establish a competitive grant program in the California Department of Food and Agriculture to develop climate adaptation planning tools and trainings for agricultural producers and the technical assistance and agricultural organizations providers that serve them. The bill would require the director to make available, upon appropriation, up to $2,000,000 to fund the grant program.

The bill comes after AB 409 (Limón), which was held in the Senate Appropriations Committee last year. Assemblymember Limón continues to be a champion for climate resiliency and adaptation and seeks to ensure that adaptation tools and methods are made available for farms of all sizes.  “Small or moderately sized farms and ranches do not have equal access to resources on how to adapt to climate change, AB 1071 seeks to address that disparity,” said Assemblymember Limón.

AB 1071 now heads to the Assembly Appropriations committee.
