In recognition of Pride month, we’re celebrating our students, staff, and faculty in the LGBTQIA+ community!

Zoë Monge is a Film and Sociology double major with a minor in Theatre Arts. She’ll start her sophomore year in the fall and be a Pride Club officer for 2022-2023.

So far at Cal Lutheran, Zoë has worked at the SEEd (Sustainable Edible Education) garden and has been involved in the Theatre Department. They worked on costumes for this year’s musical and acted in a 10-minute play along with a student film. They will also be working as the departmental assistant for the Costume Department starting next year. Plus, they’re a member of the improv troupe.

Two accomplishments Zoë is proud of achieving at Cal Lutheran are receiving two Gumby acting awards for her performance in the one-acts, and the Koa-Plumeria Prize for Best Morning Glory literary submission.

Someone in the LGBTQIA+ community that has inspired Zoë is cartoonist Alison Bechdel: “Her books and comics approach queerness and coming out with such honesty and humor. They really helped me through coming out and laugh a little while doing it.”

Zoë expressed what Pride Month means to them in saying, “Pride Month is a month where members of the LGBTQIA+ community and our allies come together to celebrate the progress we have made in the liberation of our community, remember those who have suffered and passed on during the fight for liberation, and a time to take action and spread awareness of the work that still needs to be done.”
