It’s the first day of Spring, so it’s fitting to share about Theodosia B. Shepherd – often known as the “Flower Wizard of California”.
Theodosia was born in Keosauqua, Iowa in 1845. She moved with her family to Ventura in 1873. Theodosia was a collector of seeds, plants and flowers. She is considered the first woman to hybridize flowers and sell the seeds.
Attributed with being the founder of the California seed industry, Theodosia is credited with developing the ‘Golden West’ California Poppy and the ‘Heavenly Blue’ Morning Glory. Remnants of her gardens are located near the E.P. Foster Library in Ventura and there have been attempts to revitalize the area where she cultivated her plants and flowers with several community gardens.
