LGBTQIA+ community

5

In recognition of Pride month, we’re celebrating our students, staff, and faculty in the LGBTQIA+ community!

Al Nascimento is a Music Education and Composition double major. They are the current vice-president of the Pride Club and recently emceed the 2022 Drag Show. Al is also involved in the Musician's Club, Chapel Choir, E-Sports Club, and Tabletop Gaming Club.

Coming up on their fourth year this fall, Al is proud of their adjusting post-quarantine and adds, “ my growth during the 2021/22 year is definitely something I can look back on and consider an achievement.”

When asked who in the LGBTQIA+ community inspires them, Al shared about a professor they look up to a lot: “Aside from just being an amazing professor, their openness about their sexuality was major comfort to me. It's easy to get into this mindset that young people are the only openly queer folk you'd see, but seeing a successful, fully functioning adult casually talking about their spouse and experiences as someone in the community reminded me I've still got a future ahead.”

For Al, Pride Month is a time when they feel more empowered: “While it's been fairly commercialized and that draws attention away from rights advocacy more than people may realize, the visibility is worth something on its own.” It is also their birth month!
