We’re celebrating our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students, faculty and staff in recognition of AAPI Heritage Month!
Terehna Soriano is a senior majoring in Liberal Studies in Education and minoring in Sociology. She has been a Peer Advisor, Peer Advisor Lead, and is one of the current programming interns for the Center for Cultural Engagement and Inclusion. She also co-founded FILO (CLU Filipino Club) and is the current club president.
About choosing Cal Lutheran, Terehna says, “the classes were the perfect size to me, and I felt that I was able to create better friendships/mentorships with faculty and staff.”
Terehna shares that her junior year was a big struggle. With school online and being stuck at home, she started to lose motivation which affected her mentally and physically: “Honestly, with good therapy and talking with family and friends, I looked at the pandemic in a different light and tried to make the best out of it. My friends would have movie nights or game nights via zoom and I put a lot of my free time towards creating FILO, working out, and school. I pushed myself out of that funk and am grateful for where I am now.”
In her free time, Terehna enjoys hanging out with friends and family. “I am also a big foodie, but specifically love getting boba with friends. I am always open to trying out new boba places especially in the area.”
Terehna shares that she is proud of starting FILO her junior year because she struggled finding a sense of community at Cal lutheran, and, “didn’t want future first years to experience what I was feeling at the time. FILO has brought people together and has been a great time for all of us to learn more about the culture, language, and so much more.”
“I am so excited to graduate and will be attending Cal Lutheran’s credential program this fall. I look forward to student teaching this fall and hope to teach third or fourth graders in the future!”
