California Lutheran University issued the following announcement on April 14.
In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we’re celebrating our students, staff, and faculty that identify as AAPI!
Kamakani DeBlake is a senior majoring in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Health Professions. She is also the president of Hawaii Club and a member of the Regals Basketball team. Kamakani is from Mānoa, O’ahu and she chose Cal Lutheran to continue her academic and athletic careers while getting an out-of-state college experience in a nice community.
The global pandemic in the middle of Kamakani’s college experience has been her biggest challenge: “The pandemic broke out during the spring semester of my sophomore year, and I didn’t return to campus until my senior year. It was really hard to do my work away from school with time difference and being away from all of the helpful resources that Cal Lutheran offers when we need help. It was also difficult to be away from my team and to step away from basketball for a whole year.”
In her free time, Kamakani enjoys hanging out with friends and family, trying new things, and seeing new places.
Making Dean’s list at Cal Lutheran for multiple semesters, Kamakani said of her accomplishments, “I am very proud of myself for being able to stay on top of my academics while continuing to stay involved in extracurriculars.”
