California Lutheran University recently issued the following announcement.
Club Spotlight! The purpose of the Black Student Union is to learn about, raise awareness, celebrate, and share the richness of Black history and current issues affecting the Black community, and enjoy the varied aspects of African culture in the U.S. and around the world.
For President of BSU, Maya Fleming ‘22, being involved in Black Student Union means being accepted and loved in all of your blackness. I hope that everyone who comes to the club feels a sense of family and community and is comfortable to exist in themselves whatever that may look like. Members will be exposed to Black history, ways to manage stress and take care of themselves in college, time management, lessons in Black culture as well as how to have fun.”
BSU puts on amazing events during Black History Month in February that includes many educational programs. Additionally, “We have a lot of fun activity nights and outings that members are welcomed to participate in. Events such as Horror Nights and outings to Skate and Bowl coupled with campus events we put on such as the cookouts[, Fashion Show,] and Soul Fest offer plenty of incentive for students to come out and find something they would enjoy.”
As the president of BSU, Maya has enjoyed her time in the club and the relationships she’s been able to gain. “Seeing the impact this organization has on students who look like me and how excited they are to build community and get to know each other is a highlight and all I ever hoped for.”
Maya shares her reason for joining BSU: “I have always been passionate about community and friendship within the Black community. CLU doesn't have a large Black student population so I found it really important to immerse myself in the community and build lasting relationships while also helping to create resources and a better college experience for students who look like me.”
BSU meets Tuesdays at 7pm in Nygreen 2. @bsucallutheran
